An undergraduate college education has become almost necessary (link) in the United States. Without one, it is nearly impossible (link) to build a professional career or find a job that pays more than the minimum wage. However, where you go to college matters (link) as well. Students who go to the most elite (link) universities often obtain the best jobs and make the most money, although this is not always true (link). There are many sacrifices to obtaining an elite college education; the largest, its cost. Elite, private universities have a high cost of attendance. While there are wealthy families that can afford to pay the fees out of pocket, and impoverished families who can send their children to these schools for free, there is a squeeze for middle-class families whose incomes look large on paper, but do not have enough money to pay for all of their children's college education. These students are often forced to take out loans, which can be detrimental to their financial position after graduation.
